Abstract

Recently Adrienne Mayor wrote Gods and Robots, Myths, Machines and Ancient Dreams of Technology [6] in which she gives a wonderful and extensive survey of the role that automata played in Greek and Roman mythology. Yet myths are no historical narrative. We discuss in what sense Mayor’s book is a valuable contribution to the history of technology.
