Abstract
The importance of having short set-up times in manufacturing has been well documented in the literature in the past years. Several publications describe how set-up times can be reduced. However, in these publications the authors limit themselves to simple situations usually involving one machine and one machine-setter. In practice many situations exist involving multiple machines or workstations that form a machine line. These are typically setup by more than one operator. This paper describes the first step of our research: the development of a quantitative model to minimize the set-up time when multiple machines and persons are involved.
