Abstract

This chapter introduces the value-based approach to philanthropy. It shows that giving is the normal thing to do, and that so-called altruism is more than self-interest in daily practice. To see this, the value-based approach inserts the notion of shared practices and stresses the willingness to contribute. It also allows for a critical analysis of current philanthropic practices of the very rich.
