    Abstract

The United States of America have very slowly been coming to terms with a national history of slavery, segregation, and terror against black Americans, leaving a legacy of second-class citizenship for blacks. Truthful speech about this collective wrongdoing remains difficult. Repentance and making right of that wrongdoing remains incomplete. Forgiveness for that wrongdoing therefore remains unfinished. And yet, recent national, state, and private efforts to tell the truth, pay reparations, and honor America's greatest black leader, Martin Luther King, demonstrate considerable progress.
