Back to Space: Making Room for René Daniëls

Abstract

The painter René Daniëls rarely installed his work outside traditional gallery walls. Still, in the few extra-muros installations the artist did complete, his profound reflection on the politics of exhibition space and its entanglement with painting was extended to the dimensions of the exhibition as event. By not inviting him to participate in the quintessential exhibition 'Chambres d’amis' (1986), an occasion was missed to reflect upon the conditions of viewing in the large-scale production. Many of the artists selected, as well as its premise, share marked concerns with Daniëls’s work. More than thirty years on, on the occasion of the artist's retrospective exhibition in Brussels, it is high time to revisit one of Belgium’s most celebrated presentations of contemporary art to consider the many resonances it shared with Daniëls’s practice.
