N2 - Identity and taking ownership of our identity is the basis to start from if we are to understand and promote British values in the Early Years setting. This chapter considers the definition of what it means to be British. As practitioners, it is important to understand the meaning if we are to impart this concept on our youngest members of society and provide opportunities for British values in practice. Ultimately, it means the sense of belonging that we all crave, but not at the risk of losing our uniqueness. It focuses on the importance of personal identity and the place of national identity. It also introduces the meaning of a shared identity. It explains that, by rejecting certain communities or individuals, it may have a negative impact on their perception of self and belonging which can lead to feelings of isolation and rejection and ultimately lead to extreme and negative behaviour.
