Abstract

Eight cohortes Batavorum were stationed in Britain around the middle of the first century A.D. In the Year of the Four Emperors they were back on the continent and revolted openly under the leadership of Iulius Civilis, prefect of a ninth Batavian cohort. The revolt was crushed in A.D. 70, but this did not mean the end of the service of cohortes Batavorum in the Roman army of the Principate. We hear of one quingenary and four milliary cohorts, which were active as auxiliaries in Britain, Upper and Lower Germany, Raetia, Noricum, Pannonia, Dacia and Moesia. Not only ethnic Batavi served in these cohorts.
