Abstract

In this short reply to Alan Irwin, we zoom in on the three main issues he raises: 1. How to understand consensus? 2. Why are so many public participation activities consensus driven? 3. Should we not value the art of closure? We also use this opportunity to highlight and further develop some of the ideas presented in our research paper "Participation Beyond Consensus? Technology Assessments, Consensus Conferences and Democratic Modulation."
