Bijbelvertalen met AI: een bedreiging of een verrijking?

Translated title of the contribution: Translating the Bible with AI: danger or opportunity?

Research output: Contribution to JournalArticleProfessional

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is likely to play a major role in Bible translation projects in the near future. What are the possibilities, opportunities and dangers? In this article, I discuss that question from two perspectives. First, from a translation studies perspective. How can we define the process of translation, and what happens when an AI model takes over translation from a human? Second, the article addresses an essential aspect of Bible translation: in the Christian tradition, vernacular translations receive the status of sacred Scripture. Each new translation offers a cultural re-imagination and articulation of the message, and is thus also a cultural witness to the text. Can AI be integrated into this process without harming it? The decisive question is how to use the new possibilities in a way that is constructive and appropriate to the Bible.
