Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) applicable to the environmental monitoring of organic pollutants. First, an introduction is given to the public and political interests in the preservation of our natural capital and the importance of the quality of measurement data for the management of environmental resources. CRMs have a fundamental role in this context, by securing reliable and accurate measurement results and enabling comparability in time and space by being primary means for the metrological traceability of data. Aspects such as the production and applications of CRMs are addressed, before presenting a summarised overview of the available CRMs for the different environmental compartments. A compilation of CRM producers and databases, and an outlook to new developments in the field complete the contribution.
