Abstract
The polemic between Coornhert and Lipsius was a principled exchange over freedom of expression and the role of the vernacular in that context. This article offers an analysis of this polemic between two former allies. It shows how Coornhert changed his approach to religion and became an advocate of the confession of one's faith. According to the later Coornhert, freedom of speech was not only a natural right and a Christian obligation, but also a fundamental element of Dutch liberty.
