My contribution to this volume situates Van Looy's narrative poem on The Battle of the Somme in the context of wider public reactions to the film as described in newspapers of the time. Here, film historical research provides crucial background information for a better understanding of poetry. In the accompanying documentary by Leo, I explain the historical importance of The Battle of the Somme, arguing for a conception of national film heritage that moves beyond a focus on Dutch production.
