Abstract
This article gives an overview of the questions that might be put to explore religious issues in the life and present situation of psychiatric patients. These questions are directed at the spiritual sources of the patient, sources that may provide the strength to face the existential turmoil and the feeling of being excluded which is so often associated with psychiatric illness. The religious anamnesis, therefore, is concerned with the core of the clinical endeavor, in the sense that it aims at delineating the framework in which experiences are coded and reorganized in the course of treatment. The article argues for the importance of the religious anamnesis, it describes both general and more specfic questions, and it ends by focusing the attention to a number of religious and religion-associated subjects that could be addressed depending on the religious tradition to which the patient belongs.
