Abstract
This article presents an assignment in narratological analysis and interpretation
of short narrative texts in Latin and Greek. Students analyze the use of
four narratological techniques in a narrative text. Their analysis results in a tension
graph, which is meant to facilitate their interpretation of the narrative. Moreover,
this tension graph presents them with a formal scheme of short narratives, which
will help them to read texts that are similarly structured. In this assignment, the
text is presented to students both in the original language and in translation. Using
this didactic form, pupils who are able to skim and scan a text in Dutch will learn
how to skim and scan a text in Greek or Latin.
