Abstract

Scepticism relating to language itself ('Taalscepsis') is seen by Douwe Fokkema and Elrud Ibsch as a quality of modernistic texts. In Het Modernisme in de Europese Letterkunde they present To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf and Eva by Carry van Bruggen as novels in which this modernistic quality has a prominent position. In this article, expressions of scepticism relating to language are compared to other functions of language in both novels. The question is, to what extent Woolf and Van Bruggen have had the intention to demonstrate the inadequacy of language.
