Abstract
Introduction to a special issue of Phoenix on a symposium in Dordrecht (21 April 2018) organized by the society Ex Oriente Lux on the knowledge of the translators and illustrators of the States Bible of the Ancient Near East. Four speakers: Fred van Lieburg on the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-9) on her decision to make a new Bible translation and her reorientation on the Ancient world, Theodor Dunkelgrün on Johannes Drusius, Kees-Jan van Linden on the translation principles and the knowledge of Hebrew of the translators, and Gerrit van der Kooij on the illustrations in the early printed Bibles (since 1637). Updated papers of three speakers in this issue; brief summary of Dunkelgrün's lecture in the present introduction.
