Abstract

This article argues that the doctrine of providence offers comfort because it not only refers to God's general overruling of history but also the specific interference of God with human affairs - that nevertheless respects human freedom - classically referred to by the term concursus. Only when God is actually involved in human actions we make those of ourselves and of others the object of prayer. This presupposes providence as an all-powerful and omnipresent power of God that does not compete with human liberty, but carries, surrounds and ultimately determines it.
