Abstract

During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands Jewish workers in the diamond industry could obtain an exemption from deportation. When the exemptions were withdrawn, mid 1943, they and their families were deported to Camp Westerbork and later on to Bergen-Belsen. In December 1944 the men were suddenly deported to Sachsenhausen and the women to Beendorf. The almost 50 children were left to die but were rescued by the intervention of a young Jewish-Polish fellow prisoner. She managed to pull the children through. Almost all the men perished, many women survived, if only barely. This book, based on video and written testimonies and personal interviews, tells their story, largely in their own words.
