Abstract

Since 2004, there have been several initiatives regarding the development of a digital Sport Medical Record (SMD). Interviews with the Netherlands Association of Sports Medicine (VSG) show that there are particular problems with commissioning of the digital SMD. During spring 2012, two focus group interviews with sports physicians were conducted to get insight in: the experience of sports physicians with current systems, the desirability and feasibility of a central system and requirements needed for a digital SMD. Results from the interviews show that: 1) the sports physicians are positive about a digital SMD, 2) the current digital SMD is not effective and therefore not widely used, and 3) the current systems that sports physicians use do not communicate effectively with each other. The main recommendation to create an effective and widely used digital SMD is to reach consensus on the basic data that should be included in the digital SMD. As a result of the none effective communication between the current systems, and taking into account the fact that hospitals often use multiple systems, another recommendation is to initially focus on the development and implementation of a digital SMD in the non-hospital based sports medical institutions (Dutch: SMI's).
