Abstract

This contribution deals with Coornhert's disputations with Reformed ministers. It shows that Coornhert's ideas on how to organize a sensible debate underwent significant change. More and more he expected the audience present to judge who was right and who was wrong. Hence truth finding became the more and more the responsibility of individual believers. Coornhert came to believe that the aim of a proper debate was to inform his audience so that they could decide on true and false in accordance with their own conscience.
