Abstract
The World Economic Forum (WEF) brings together the most influential entrepreneurs and key policymakers in the Western world. To some, this conjures up the image of an elite plot striving for world domination. Indeed, this meeting carries the seeds of the idea that a conspiracy is being hatched there. A conspiracy to which ordinary citizens are excluded and trough which their actions and thinking are subdued. This article argues on the basis of the published documents that the WEF is not a conspiracy, but that it does try to promote the interests of international business in order to enable doing business with good profitability. Insofar as the interests of business and society run parallel, this is not objectionable. However, it should not arouse compliance on the part of national governments if, based on national political preferences, they want and must safeguard the public interest through their own regulations.
