Abstract

This book investigates employee emotional dynamics during an unfolding merger and acquisition(M&A). More often than not, M&As fail, causing much damage to those involved. M&A performance is often translated into a monetary value. This perspective leads to technical(hard) instead of human (soft) steering mechanisms and strategies. This is surprising, as M&As are highly emotional events. Companies are full of employees who constantly experience positive and negative emotions. To a high degree, these emotions shape their attitudes, behaviours and decision-making. Light is shed on how emotions develop and progress over time, their positive and negative effects and their complex nature. These insights help comprehend employee emotional dynamics better. Enabling, for instance, firms to provide employees with better emotional support possibly lowers uncertainty and stress, ultimately preventing stress-related illnesses like burnout. Understanding employee emotions better might elevate M&A performance and overall well-being.
