Abstract

This site was constructed as part of a faculty innovation project on Academic English. The construction work also formed part of a Grassroots project supported by the VU Onderwijscentrum. The project team consisted of Eric Akkerman, Mike Hannay (coordinator), Onno Huber, Jorien Korver, Mathias Lang, Yolande Spoelder, Ben Stuyvenberg, Sarah van Vliet, and Bert Weltens. The site was revised and expanded in 2015 and 2016. The team this time consisted of Mike Hannay, Gea Dreschler, Nel de Jong and Romy van den Heerik, with support from Eric Akkerman, Onno Huber and Ben Stuyvenberg.

The site can be accessed independently but is in fact specifically designed so as to be accessed from files in which student written work has been given feedback in the form of error codes and brief explanatory cues relating to specific topics. Students can proceed directly from the cue to the relevant page on this site if they feel they want a fuller explanation of what is problematic within that specific topic.

Many of the site pages also include direct links to exercises which have been designed to cover the specific problems that students encounter within the topic concerned.

The examples used in the texts come from a variety of sources. A small number of examples are constructed. Others are taken from earlier versions of this website or other publications by the project team, or are adapted from student texts collected between 2012 and 2016 at the Vrije Universiteit. All students were asked permission to use their texts for teaching purposes such as these.
