Abstract
The integration of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) in a management information system (MIS) for environmental restoration of a surface mining area was discussed. Remote sensing was used basically for the collection of relevant input data for the surface mining MIS. The ASTERISMOS project confirmed the strength of the integration of remote sensing and GIS in a MIS. The ASTERISMOS MIS for restoration of mining areas, proved to be an effective tool for development and evaluation of different mine restoration strategies.
