Abstract

In his writings on bioethics Philip Kitcher develops a conception of the quality of life. He uses this conception to defend the moral legitimacy of prenatal testing, abortion and liberal eugenics. In this paper, Kitcher's conception of the quality of life is reconstructed and critically analyzed with special focus on his conception of a life theme. It is concluded that some of the key concepts in his conception are in need of further modification and specification.
