Abstract

This collection of studies on the history of foreign language teaching was published in 1993. Dutch scholars from different universities outline different traditions in Dutch second language education from 1500 till 1970. The studies deal with different ways of teaching foreign languages and their scientific, cultural and political backgrounds, the role of the Dutch vernacular, Erasmus on learning languages, 17th-century teaching of Hebrew, language masters in the 17th century, training institutions in the Netherlands in the 19th century, the study of foreign language around 1900 in Groningen and the study of German in Utrecht between 1876 and 1921.
