Abstract

In general faith is not a prominent issue in the diaries of Jewish deportees to the camps. Religious attitudes vary from secularism to orthodoxy. Some authors had an external readership in mind and wanted to record a chronicle of camp life, others kept it solely for their private use. For all diarists the purpose the diary served to keep in touch with the person they had been before being reduced to a number or vermin, like the camp system aimed at.
