Abstract
An extensive article on the mixed marriage crisis in Ezra 9-10 and Nehemiah 13. After an exegesis of the passages and a comparison with the laws in Deuteronomy and Leviticus, a variety of views on the background of the crisis is presented, from religious to sociologic. The role of ethnicity and gender is discussed, and also alternative suggestions like the 'witch-hunt' theory by David Janzen. In the end, the rather extreme stance of Ezra and Nehemiah is compared to other positions that can be found in the Old Testament.
