Abstract

In deze bijdrage wordt Benthams utilitarisme als ethische theorie besproken en langs twee lijnen bekritiseerd. Het eerste kritiekpunt betreft de calculerende, instrumentele houding van de mens tegenover zijn natuurlijke omgeving, die binnen het utilitarisme wordt verondersteld. Het tweede kritiekpunt betreft de eveneens calculerende en instrumentele wijze waarop het utilitarisme de mens zelf benadert, waardoor de morele integriteit van de mens als verantwoordelijk persoon onder druk kan komen te staan.
