Abstract
In Latin historiography, the Latin adverb iam is involved in at least three different narrative techniques. When it signals a temporal overlap with the following context, it creates, as is discussed by Chausserie-Laprée, an atmosphere of dramatic anticipation. It can however also be used to indicate an overlap with preceding events or to signal a narrative acceleration. The latter two techniques may but need not combine with the first one.
