Abstract
This speech shows how you can tell the story of the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) in a more inclusive way, by giving more attention to the role of the ordinary men and women, farmers, fishers, and colonized peoples. This story also shows how the Dutch managed to commercialize warfare to an extraordinary extent, by putting a professionalized army under civilian control and by standardizing armaments and methods of warfare, in Europe and overseas. The Eighty Years' War thus enabled a Golden Age, making the Dutch the richest people of the seventeenth and eighteenth century world. At the same time, social inequality increased tremendously, not only at home, but also worldwide.
