Abstract

The livability of our cities is becoming a topic of increasing relevance and urgency. As a response to these challenges, urban governments have sought to share responsibilities: unable to address these major challenges on their own, they seek cooperation with other governments, companies, civil society organizations, and citizens. This first chapter introduces the central question of the book: How do partnerships between public and private actors contribute to the livability of cities? The authors discuss the concepts of ‘livability’ and ‘partnerships’. Furthermore, they present a typology of different types of partnerships. Finally, the chapter also provides the outline of the book and a brief overview of the different chapters.
