JUGGLING STREET WORK AND DATA WORK: AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF POLICING AND REPORTING PRACTICES

Research output: Contribution to Conference › Paper › Academic

Abstract

Research on data production often aims to unpack the nature and work practices related to data. Not much is known about how the need to produce data influences the performance of situated work. Our three-year ethnographic study of the Dutch police shows that officers adopt three strategies to cope with data work in situated practices: avoiding work, deviating from protocol, and capturing experiences. Our findings have implications for research on data production and anticipatory work. We argue that data construction starts at the situated practices and show how anticipating data activities influences how both situated and data work are performed.
