Abstract
Keynote lecture by the Chair of the Royal Historical society on the role of historians in enhancing and activating historical awareness in public debate; stressing the importance of active historiographic debate among historians as an essential basis for a convincing contribution of individual historians in politically contested issues where various participants invoke their versions of the past.
