Abstract

This paper aims to provide an insight in the use of various forms of speech, writing and thought report in German journalism in the 20th century. All data are taken from the journalism genre of the reference corpus for the German language of the twentieth century (DWDS). It is demonstrated that a shift from indirect to direct speech has taken place within the 20th century. A comparable shift has been observed in Dutch and English journalism.
