Abstract

In January 2022, inflation in The Netherlands amounted to 6.4% on an annual basis. The Dutch government has been asked to take policy measures to restore purchasing power in view of this high and possibly lasting inflation. However, the statistically determined data on inflation and purchasing power should be assessed with some caution, as energy prices are primarily responsible for this inflation. This must be taken into account when restoring purchasing power. After all, higher energy prices are necessary and desirable to accelerate the energy transition. Partly in view of the wage increases resulting from job changes in the tense labor market, purchasing power recovery policy must therefore be designed with care. But a major decline in purchasing power for those on a tight budget who can't change jobs or live off retirement needs to be repaired.
