Abstract
ABSTRACT
An increase in productivity is an important source of economic growth. Traditionally, productivity has been measured in terms of labor productivity or total factor productivity (tfp). Productivity is hereby related to material welfare. From the point of view of a broad concept of welfare, however, a more inclusive measurement of productivity is needed. For example, labor productivity growth and tfp growth yield an overestimate of actual productivity growth when environmental capital is consumed. The perspective of a broad measure of welfare requires different measures of productivity. This is particularly true in the agricultural sector, with policy aimed at a strong reduction in nitrogen emissions for the benefit of nature restoration. For example, there are already quite a few ideas from policy on how the transition to a climate-neutral society with nature restoration offers opportunities for new revenue models for the farmer. This needs to be further developed so that it offers farmers, who have pledged their hearts to their work and their lands, insight into future opportunities that do justice to their passion.
