Abstract

Als een van de eerste in Nederland begon de VU in de jaren zeventig met een afdeling informatica. Dankzij de Amerikaanse hoogleraar Andy Tanenbaum bereikte de afdeling al snel internationale faam. Tanenbaum werd vooral bekend om MINIX, een zeer licht unix-bestuurssysteem, waarop in 1991 Linux geïnspireerd is. In 2006 kwam MINIX 3 uit, en het wordt nog steeds gebruikt in onderwijs. Computer-historicus Danny Beckers schets de ontwikkeling van informatica aan de VU en MINIX. Conservator Liselotte Neervoort reflecteert op de vraag hoe dergelijk erfgoed te bewaren en te presenteren valt.
