Abstract

Misplaced concreteness: psychopathological and philosophical aspects of ‘the’ demonical.
The article is written against the background of a resurgence of interest into the ministry of deliverance (exorcism) in orthodox protestant churches in the Netherlands. Part one sets the stage by arguing for an open, non-dualistic worldview over against a view that contrasts or juxtaposes religious and scientific approaches to disease and illness. There is no disease ‘as such’, completely distinct from spiritual/religious issues. Part two applies this approach to the reality of evil in both its spiritual and natural manifestations. I will develop the concept of evil as a power with disrupting and destructive consequences. Part three discusses three arguments against any form of ministry of deliverance that considers demons as personalized spiritual entities that can be detected by sufficiently gifted people: this ministry potentially induces guilt and dependence; it wrongfully considers itself to be able to ‘diagnose’ demons (I call this misplaced concreteness); and I highlight the unclear, quasi-therapeutical status of the ministry of deliverance as it is currently practiced in the Netherlands. Part four shows how current psychiatry tries to explain conditions like depression, anxiety disorder, psychosis, dissociative disorder, somatoform disorder, and addiction. Finally I sketch an approach in which existential issues can be addressed within the context of psychotherapy and psychiatry.
