Abstract

The relationship between payment and earnings, and between payment and merit, is complex, in particular because merit is partly culturally determined, but also depends on one's own appreciation and preferences. Being a winner is often regarded as a merit. The meritocratic ideology that, by performing well, you are responsible for your own welfare, promotes a dichotomy between winners and losers. It is your fault if you are a loser. Yet this performance-oriented behavior does not necessarily lead to well-being. That is because life is not a game with winners and losers. In a true welfare state everyone, given the own preferences and possibilities, should be able to feel like a winner. This "winning" may not come at the expense of others, the "losers". In the good world, everyone is a winner.
