Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between narrative complexity in media, cognitive styles, and political ideology. Through an analysis of data from the VU Election Studies involving 2,400 Dutch adults, the study examines how preferences for complex narratives in films and television correlate with political ideologies and cognitive traits. The findings reveal that a preference for complex narratives is linked to progressive political ideologies, while conservative ideologies are associated with simpler media narratives. This suggests that cognitive styles not only shape media preferences but also reflect broader political orientations, highlighting the role of narrative complexity in understanding media consumption and its impact on political behavior.
