Abstract

This chapter examines the narratives surrounding transatlantic returnmigration to Italy and Austria(-Hungary) in the nineteenth and twentieth centu-ries. While much research has focused on the impact of return migration, thisstudy explores the perception of return migration both in the sending countriesand by the migrants themselves. Using national and immigrant newspapers, thechapter combines quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze narratives ofreturn migration. The aim is to understand how economic and political circum-stances may have influenced concepts of foreignness and belonging.
