Abstract
Sinds 2019 verwijdert de politie geen persoonsgegevens meer die onder de Wet politiegegevens (Wpg) vallen, met als argument dat deze nodig zijn voor het oplossen van cold cases. Daarbij gaat het om gegevens van vrijwel iedereen die op enigerlei wijze met de politie in contact is gekomen. Dit beleid is in strijd met de wettelijke bewaartermijnen en het beginsel van dataminimalisatie. In het licht van een mogelijke herziening van de Wpg onderzoekt dit artikel welke richtsnoeren de Europese rechtspraak biedt voor een nieuw opslagregime en hoe deze zich verhouden tot voorstellen voor langere bewaartermijnen.
