Abstract

The description of foreign funeral rites in Silius Italicus' Pun. 13.471-487 should be read in the light of the Thebaid of Silius' contemporary Statius, with its "Leitmotif" of burial and the lack of it. Silius' passage contributes to the characterisation of Scipio as an epic hero.
