Oral health in cancer survivors: Especially in those treated during childhood

This thesis is divided in two parts. The first part of this thesis describes oral complications, oral cGVHD, salivary flow rates and OHRQoL in adult survivors of cancer. The second part of this thesis describes oral health and patient-reported outcomes in CCS. Part I. Oral health-related quality of life and oral complications in patients with hematological malignancies Chapter 2 provides a systematic review which evaluates the impact of hematological malignancies and their treatment on the OHRQoL. In Chapter 3, the OHRQoL, the salivary flow rates and oral mucosal complications among adult cancer survivors with oral cGVHD are examined. Part II. Oral health in childhood cancer survivors In Chapter 4, the prevalence and independent risk factors for long-term effects of childhood cancer treatment on the dentition and oral health are examined among CCS. In Chapter 5, the prevalence of and independent risk factors for salivary gland dysfunction and xerostomia in CCS are assessed. Also, the association between decreased salivary flow rates and xerostomia is studied. In Chapter 6, patient-reported outcomes on oral health and OHRQoL are described in CCS. In the final chapters, we summarize and reflect on the main findings, we discuss the implications for oral care, and present recommendations for future research, clinical practice and education.
