Abstract

Despite the growing literature on business model innovation (BMI), knowledge about how mature firms can design and implement radically new business models notwithstanding their ongoing commitments towards a pre-existing business model remains incomplete. We address this issue by examining the unique resource management challenges in business model innovation initiatives. Using a hand-collected dataset of 141 BMI initiatives we argue and find, that BMI initiatives should be endowed with differentiated resources, socially embedded into the parent organization, and enabled through formal as well as informal control mechanisms. We articulate important contributions to theories of resource management and business model innovation.
