Abstract

The series brings together experts in the social sciences, linguistics, media studies, and criminology to explore what hate speech is, and the many ways in which it manifests. From the USA, to Europe, South America and India, the experts explore the social impact of hate speech, as well as the political debates surrounding it, and the complexities of legal regulation.

Each episode dives into a different aspect of hate speech, uncovering how words can cause harm, shape political realities and create negative emotions towards entire communities.

Together the experts in the series try to find answers to urgent questions: how can law address hate speech without infringing on civil liberties? Where does hate speech begin? And what can ordinary citizens do to mitigate the harms of hate speech in everyday life?
