Reasoning beyond Triples: Recent Advances in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Research output: Chapter in Book / Report / Conference proceeding › Conference contribution › Academic › peer-review

Abstract

Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are a collection of facts describing entities connected by relationships. KG embeddings map entities and relations into a vector space while preserving their relational semantics. This enables effective inference of missing knowledge from the embedding space. Most KG embedding approaches focused on triple-shaped KGs. A great amount of real-world knowledge, however, cannot simply be represented by triples. In this tutorial, we give a systematic introduction to KG embeddings that go beyond the triple representation. In particular, the tutorial will focus on temporal facts where the triples are enriched with temporal information, hyper-relational facts where the triples are enriched with qualifiers, n-ary facts describing relationships between multiple entities, and also facts that are augmented with literal and text descriptions. During the tutorial, we will introduce both fundamental knowledge and advanced topics for understanding recent embedding approaches for beyond-triple representations.

Bo Xiong is a PhD candidate at International Max Plank Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS) and an Early Stage Researcher on the Marie Sklodowska-Curie project–Knowledge Graphs at Scale at University of Stuttgart. He has worked on KG embeddings with metadata (hyper-relations) and background knowledge, which are published in top venues such as NeurIPS, KDD, ACL, SIGIR, etc. His work on background knowledge enhanced KG embedding received the ISWC 2022 Best Student Paper Award. Mojtaba Nayyeri is a PhD candidate at the University of Stuttgart. His research has focused on KG embedding, encompassing various areas including temporal KG embedding, integration of language models with KG embedding, complex query answering, KG unlearning, and addressing bias in embedding. He has made significant contributions to the field and has published numerous papers in esteemed conferences/journals such as NeurIPS, AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, and IEEE Transactions on pattern analysis and machine intelligence. Danial Daza is a PhD candidate at the Learning and Reasoning group at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Intelligent Data Engineering Lab at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests comprise representation learning in KGs, and the integration of external data sources to refine and extend KGs. He has published works on these areas in venues such as ICLR, The Web Conference, and ACL. His work on query answering obtained an Outstanding Paper Award at ICLR 2021. Michael Cochez is an Assistant Professor in the Learning and Reasoning group at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He has worked on node embedding techniques, such as RDF2Vec and KGloVe, as well as complex reasoning techniques, such as MPQE (GNN approach), StarQE (hyper-relational), and CQD (using pre-trained link predictors). He also contributed to work on link prediction approaches which incorporate literals, such as including literals in KGloVe, BLP and BioBLP. Besides, he co-authored a well-recognized book on KGs, and worked on several publications on question answering with KGs.
