Abstract

The current food production system is organised for a highly optimised technology based production from an economic perspective. Several types of environmental impact are caused by the system and are in urgent need of amelioration. Pesticide application is one of the causes of environmental degradation. The Dutch government has opted to make policy agreements with farmers and pesicide producers. In this paper it is argued that a broader involvement of actors might be necessary. Successful pressure of non-government groups on the production of potatoes shows that production chains and markets forces are increasingly capable of directing environmental performance in production chains.
