Abstract
Trained as a chemist, Reijer Hooykaas (1906-1994) taught himself how to do history of science. Among his influences are Kurd Lasswitz and Ernst Cassirer. I will discuss the two earliest academic publications by Hooykaas: his 1933 dissertation on the history of the concept of ‘element’ and a 1934 academic lecture on science-and-religion in history, held at a meeting of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In my presentation I explored in what way Hooykaas was influenced by neo-Kantianism.
